Moving into the 21st century, the state of economics has shifted to a global system of trade and interdependence between the wealthier and the lesser developed nations. AS the more industrialized nations of the East and West develop more innovative forms of technology, citizens of the world find themselves with increasing demands for newer gadgets, automobiles, luxurious homes, and the constant desire for more than necessity.
Is it wrong for someone to work hard and support their family and not hope for nice things? Is having a flat screen television, high tech cell phone or newly developed computer a classic example of the bourgeousise mentality that Engels and Marx poignantly criticized in the Communist Manifesto? Well it depends on the extent. Living outside of your means and diverging from the necessities for the sake of accumulating luxurious items is where the problem begins.
Individual persons are not the overwhelming reason for the amount of environmental degradation, over consumption, and decay of rich deposits of natural resrouces. In the name of profit, multinational corporations jump into the developing markets in third world nations, with promises of investment and creation of needed infrastructure. Who profits from backdoor arrangements? Does the common receive a slice of the lion's share? No, the lions share is left to the lions while the rest of the "animal" kingdom is left to fight for whatever remains. LAnd that holds ancestoral, or cultural importance to indigenious popoulations of Africa, Asia, and South America, and even in the United States have been exploited and cast aside for the greed of CEO's and corporate executives seeking methods of growth with little regard to the lives that have been turned upside down.
The need for more has led to the destruction of precious ecosystems and helped expediate the extinction of several species for the sake of that "holy" paper currency. WHat have we become? You decide. The capitalist system has brought about class struggle and the separation of people through class distinctions. Capitalism claims to thrive from the "invisible" hand of the free market, but is that market truly free? Who suffers at the hands of the few? Around the globe men, women and children are forced to work for the meager wages that couldn't even buy a day's worth of groceries in the United States.
The conservative argument to this exploitation of the disenfranchised, centers of the basis of providing jobs and income to people who lacked the resources, until corporations sought to export their operations to the third world. The argument holds little truth because for the sake of reducing operational costs, these companies export their manufacturing centers to regions where labor is cheap. Maximizing profits while keeping the worker in conditions that help to perpetuate the cycle of exploitation and class division, that is the goal. Seems that good deeds are wrapped in the most unpure of intentions these days, and in the past.
WHat is the solution? What can be done to help alleviate the problem and begin a reversal of this parasitic relationship? The solution lies in the creation of a Social Democracy with a highly regulated market where corporations do not create political policy but policy is dictated by the elected officials who dedicvate their life to social service and improvement of the conditions for their own people. Men and women for the people. That does sound appealing. Is this possible? I believe so.
The arguments to government regulation of food, drugs, vitamins, energy, finance/investment, to the basic cleaning products that are used to keep that fresh pine smell in our bathrooms and kitchens, simply make me sick. Is having the ability to kill yourself with foods containing high levels of preservatives and genetically engineered meets and produce worth the costs of personal destruction? Having the freedom to kill yourself does not mean that it is a freedom that should be exercised. But, if you so feel the need then eat yourself into oblivion with a "double down". Hummers, double downs, super sized meals, all you can eat buffets? All this while people in the third world struggle to put a single meal on the table for their families. Are the less fortunate lazy? Are they unwilling to fight to live? NO. The problem is these people do not have the resources and governments line their pockets while their people go hungry. The problem is our nation gives financial support to governments that economically oppress their people. Companies do not practice environmentally sustainable methods with the committment to "fair trade" pricing to help give back to the communities that do the work. There is some exception and there are socially and environmentally conscious corps that incorporate these approaches, and kudos to them for doing whats right.
The goal of government should be to fight hunger, poverty and environmental destruction. Putting an end to excessive development and property construction is a must. One has to question the logic of building such large housing communities when they only fill to 20-30% capacity due to high maintanence fees and home costs. Forcing food manufacturers and farmers to use responsible methods with reduced use of pesticides, chemicals, and genetically altering hormones to make food look and taste more appealing than the actually ingredients would have it. Health care costs could be reduced with more government regulation in all aspects of society.
Creating the necessary infrastructure would prove costly in the beginning but if everyone made a little sacrifice and were more motivated by doing what's best for all, rather than the best for a few, we could have a society where everyone holds themselves accountable for the fate of the planet and mankind. Boundaries created by nationalism and economic motivations and desire for accumulation of wealth will always fight back against such a transition, but the hope is that in time more will see the light and accept the efforts towards a utopian-like society.
The time has come to reduce defense spending and to stop letting energy and drug companies run the show. The influence and lobbying is destroying the fabric of our so called freedoms. If it freedom for all or freedom for those who can afford it and slavery for all those lacking the necessary resources and tools to advance the lives of the less fortunate. Educating the poor and mobilizing them can force governments to employ more tactics to create a safety net for the lower classes. The bottom line is access to education, health care should be the goal. Class distinctions and separations create alot of tension and violence that stems from class struggle.
WE can hope for a better day and we can sure dream. We need to fix the current system and recent events in the gulf, the lies of the Iraq War, the financial meltdown, the bailouts, the health care debates are all great examples that the current state of a unregulated, free market create.

Pushing Forward Against the Past
Most people can relate to that burning desire for an epiphany. To have all of those inner questions answered in a single shot. When the times finally comes and that realization comes to light, the glaring truth proves more devastating than the the questions which left us so frustrated and torn inside.
Holding onto the past prevents each and every human being alive from reaching their true potential and reaching their own sense of enlightenment. The intention is not to overhwelm the soul with Buddhist interpretations because that is not the case. However, when we are left with burning questions begging for a answer we hope to be rescued from the burden that weighs so heavily on our shoulders.
In writing this revelation, the point is not to make false claims to steer readers towards a lie but rather to share a personal revelation that has come into light. Holding onto memories from years that have gone and passed kept me from finding the peace of mind needed for me to maintain the quest to driving ahead and ignore the temptation to punch it back in reverse.
Lovers of the past cannot stake their claim in the future if we intend to keep ourselves from making past mistakes. How does one move forward when they keep a tight grip on the memories that are just that and in the past. Living in the present is hard, especially if the present does not maintain that fonder frame of mind and times, when the difficulties did not outweigh the realized potential. A healthy future awaits those who do not hold onto that which has passed and moved on.
Without time machines no one can change the past or relive the moment with the exception of in their own mind. The problem is the past should not and is not meant to be altered in any which way because things happen and we have to use those experiences to grow and to move on. Reflecting on the past can help everyone prevent a perpetual chain of the same mistakes. Letting go does not mean we should forget or hold ill will to those who possessed the very beat of our heart with their smile, touch or their simple presence.Rather, remember the positive and use it as a guide to relive the experiences but with someone and something new.
It is easy to fall into the trap of dating or reconnecting with out ex- lovers but it is a trap with a dangerous pitfall. There's no limit to the damage we can inflict on ourselves if we choose to walk such a dangerous line. If you were mistreated or mistreated another, the wounds do not heal so easily and the potential for tearing open the scars and having our hearts bleed out is so great. Why risk disaster? The answer lies in the vulnerbility being alone. But if we truly accepted the terms of being alone until that time comes, then happiness will follow. Attachment can be great when the match has been made but attachment to the wrong person can easily backfire against all the hopes and desires of the heart.
Patience is a virtue or so it is said. I tend to agree though it is a virtue that takes continual effort to maintain. As a victim of spending years of holding onto memories and times that were more pleasant than the current state of existence, I found myself overwhelmed by circumstances out of my control. Moving on never seemed like a possible option. The determination to force another remake of the original left me paralyzed from moving forward. The sorrow tightly wound itself against my heart and created a pain that seemed to be in control. Analyzing and reflecting I realized how the past had consumed me with feelings of guilt and remorse for being a person I had long worked to change and improve.
The guilt and shame of past mistakes should never block the improvements made to repair those traits or missteps we took along the way. Let it go and forget if it means healing. Staying close to an ex wife or girlfriend/boyfriend only keeps us living in the past. I suffered and drained myself over the past mistakes I made but when I realized that it was a different time and place I was able to begin the healing process. Never sure what awaits me each and ever new day, I look forward to the opportunities and the potential for more that awaits. I have finally let go and learned to not be consumed by attachment to others but rather I learned a healthy form of detachment that helps me keep the candle of hope burning.
Never again will the traps of the past take hold. Uncertainty never poisons the soul like guilt and I'd rather exercise patience than be torn apart by the waiting the game. Like Tom Petty said, "the waiting is the hardest part", but learning to accept it and use it as a tool to move forward is the goal. Goodbye to the days of yesterday and embrace the potential for something more.

Washington Redskins: Makeover Edition
When the Washington Redskins brought in Mike Shanahan and general manager, Bruce Allen, ownner Dan Snyder knew that the team needed a shakeup from the foundation on up. Jim Zorn's short tenure proved a failure and Snyder was not going to make another reach for a coach without quality credentials. Shanahan give the Redskins the coach with a winning history and ability to build high octane offenses. The organization cannot continue to live in the shadows of Joe Gibbs and Shanahan gives fans hope for something more.
Many coaches take over teams that are bereft all talent on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. The Redskins gave Shanahan a quality situation with a roster that includes receiver Santana Moss, pass rushers; Andre Carter and Brian Okrapo, and linebacker London Fletcher to man the middle of the linebacking corps. As soon as Shanahan was given the keys to the car he immediately invested one of his second round draft picks to trade with their division rival, Philadelphia Eagles. They made a trade to acquire former Nebraska standout, Adam Carriker while adding a couple veteran running backs with Larry Johnson and Willie Parker. On the defenisve side, 3-4 defensive mind, Jim Haslett was brought on board to man the defensive coordinator position. Throwing in a solid draft that included the additions of offensive tackle, Anthony Davis and linebacker, Perry Riley and the Redskins added quality depth along the offensive and defensive lines while acuqiring a franchise quarterback to kickstart a stagnant offense.
Things began to look up for the Redskins until offseason conditioning started and OTAs inched closer. Albert Haynesworth decided that he did not want to play a role in the new defense installed bhy Haslett. Haynesworth claimed he felt deceived by the organization for failing to keep the 4-3 defense that attracted the defensive tackle in the summer of 2009. Haynesworth is just a year into his 100 million dollar contract that made him the richest lineman in the NFL but is more concerned with his personal statistics than being a asset to his team. Haynesworth was a force when he played for the Tennessee Titans but delivered inconsistently in 2009. He has always been questioned for his lack of motivation and drive and many teams shied away from signing the massive tackle because of the warning signs.
The Redskin organization finds itself in dire straits while it tries to sort out its 350 pound problem. One would think that if a player was rewarded with the richest contract in the NFL, he would reciprocate the compensation with a consistently stellar performance. After averaging 7 sacks during the 2007- 2008 seasons Haynesworth declined to just 4 sacks while making fewer big plays. The statistical decline is only a small portion of the problem because his refusal to play Nose Tackle proves that he is only concerned with personal fame and glory.
Washington should seek trade partners that are willing acquire a physically gifted, yet frustrating athlete and boost up its draft options for 2011. The additions of defensive lineman Maake Kemoteau and the recent signing of Vonnie Holiday provide some solid depth should Haynesworth not return. If Shanahan somehow was able to reach out to Haynesworth and get him to agree to play either defensive end or tackle in his defense while possibly being put into pash rush situations on third downs. It seems unlikely that the coach would over extend himself to a player that has only been more of a problem than a solution. If Haynesworth had any dignity left inside him, he will hopefully change his tune and show up at OTAs.
Regardless of the Haynesworth situation, the organization and their fan base should be excited for having an improving its passing game with the addition of Donovan McNabb. McNabb should perform well in a familiar West Coast system to the one he used in Philadelphia. The switch to a 3-4 gives the defense more options for creating pressure along the edges and up the middle and Haslett is sure to keep offensive coordinators on their toes. As training camp approaches, the fog should hopefully clear with the Haynesworth situation and the offense should build the chemistry it lacked under Zorn and Campbell.

My American Dream
When reflecting on the state of American society in the 21st century, the need for improvement and progress is still of vital importance to the growth and future of the nation. The growing influence of religion on social reform is eivdence of America's regression into outdated, discriminatory and invasive policy. Several nations in Western Society have adopted reforms that expand and include people of all races, income, and orientation. In the United States, elections have been decided based on candidates level of religiousity and stance on issues such as gay marriage and abortion. The debate on the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy proves that America needs leaders that are willing to transcend the boundaries placed on social progress by religious zealots.
Before the election of Ronald Reagan to the Presidency, Americans did not place such a strong emphasis on a candidates religious intensity but rather on issues of importance such as the economy, education, health care, foreign policy, and defense. The growing influence the Evangelical movement has had on the American public is astounding. Many deserving citizens are denied their right to marry, euthanasia, and right to choose because of fossil policy that have poisoned the progressive movement in both the Republican and Democratic party.
Abortion is a deciding issue in many elections in the United States. My belief is that women have a right to choose but the right cannot be abused or taken out of context. The problem with abortion is the its use as a means of contraceptive. However, despite its problems, women deserve their right to decide in cases of rape, incest, or mental and physical health of the mother. Abortions should be limited to first term because such a restriction still protects a women's right to choose while compromising with Conservatives on the window of opportunity for a woman to make her decision.
Euthanasia is a issue that most politicians refuse to touch simply on the basis of avoiding controversy. The lack of debate on the issue is affecting the rights of many Americans to decide their own right to choose their terms of death. If an individual is stricken with a terminal illness and in noticeable pain and suffering from their ailments then they should reserve the right to decide their own fate. I champion the cause of Dr. Jack Kevorkian because to a certain extent, he provided a service to those individuals. The argument against euthanasia is centered on opponent's belief that doctors would be playing God in such scenarios. However, a counter argument can be made on the basis that keeping an individual on life support with feeding tubes shoved down their throats, such as the Terry Shiavo example in Florida is also playing the role of God. Shiavo's husband was demonized for wanting to honor his wife's wishes. Her family led the campaign to keep her on life support and even had former Florida governor, Jeb Bush intervene in a decision to keep her alive. Religious leaders lobbied for her family's cause while defiantly ignoring her own wishes.
The issue of gay marriage is another crucial election issue that proves the hypocrisy of the Democratic party for failing to change the status quo for members of their own constituencies. Deciding on a person's right to get married and enjoy the same tax and personal benefits of such a institution should not be left up to religious leaders. The best part of the debate is that some prominent opponents of gay marriage are in actuality, closeted homosexual themselves. Figures such as George Reekers, and Senator Larry Craig are classic examples of the lack of credibility to its opponents arguments. Religious beliefs should not decide social policy and progress cannot be hindered by those who strongly desire to keep America in the dark ages.
The United States is lucky to possess one of if not the best military in the world. All branches such as the: Navy, Marines, Air Force and Army are staffed by dedicated, patriotic individuals that felt the call of duty. Yet despite the sacrifices of those brave men and women, many are still discriminated against regardless of their sacrifices. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is another outdated policy that destroys the careers of service men and women throughout its branches. Nations such as France, Israel, Britain, Germany, and Canada, all close American allies do not possess such discriminatory policies. The level of intensity that its opponents fight with make me question their level of compassion and degree of humanity.
Crucial issues such as economic reform, health care reform and education have all felt the sting of religious influence on policy making. When clergymen begin to dictate how policy should be made brings a valid concern to my attention. People such as John Hagee, Texas Evangelical, and Pat Robertson, former presidential candidate, one has to question the direction of our country. Evangelicals have tied themselves with the Tea Party movement and somehow, someway, Fiscal Conservatism and other areas of Social reform are being fought on the basis of Christian principles. The arguments create a picture of our Founding Fathers as highly devoted men of religious value that believed in the intertwinment of religion and politics. The debate over Separation of Church and State and how it should be interpreted is fucking astounding. Socialists are labeled as workers of the devil and their policies are labeled as contradictory to the principles taught by Jesus. If one were to closely look at the teachings of Jesus, the argument can be made to prove otherwise. In the verse; Lk. 14:12-14: Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbours; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous", one can argue that Jesus is supporting Social Justice.
Americans need to hold themselves accountable for taking responsibility of their own. The downtrodden, the addicted, the disabled, lower class, uneducated, and even our criminals are people that need help not neglect. Raising taxes to a standard that provides the necessary revenue for even more progressive social services is pertinent to the long term success of this great nation. Health Care is something that should not be privatized because it is a human service. Private health insurance should not exist. The energy sector should not be controlled by monopolizing, lobbying corporations because it is the reason for our lack of energy reform and push for alternative sources. Financial reform would have helped minimize the damage caused by the greed in the Financial and Investment sectors. People had their lives toyed with by wealthy, irresponsible executives that tanked the savings of those they worked for. Education should be paid for by our tax dollars and individuals who work and study hard should be able to reap the benefits without bankrupting themselves or putting themselves in terrible situations to make their dreams possible. Obviously, basic fees, and costs of books can be assumed by the students but the current state is a disaster. Americans need to look at the economic progress in China which has grown as a power and is developing its own middle class despite its "Communist" government. Americans should have the right to make investments and start businesses while basically enjoying the same extent of freedoms that they possessed.
The argument is that progress does essentially require a more left leaning set of reforms and progressives willing to champion these causes to improve America's chances of maintaining its prosperity in a ever changing, Global economy. Adopting reforms in the model of our European, Canadian, Israeli, and South American allies can only help more of those that are in need. Corporate greed and agenda should not have a stronger influence on policymaking in Washington, than the needs of the American people. The lobbysist stregnth and numbers are sickening and hopefully reform can correct the problem. Energy companies impact and hinder Energy Reform, Pharmaceutical Companies and Health Insurance providers dictate Health Care reform. Investment and Financial giants affect the ability to regulate them and correct the loopholes in current regulations. One Day, my hope is that my beloved country maintains its identity while looking to improve on these areas that tarnish its image.

Heavy Petting @ the Culture Room
On May 8, 2010 the Heavy Pets held a Album Release Party for the unveiling of their second, self titled album, The Heavy Pets. Having seen the band play the last few times they appeared in South Florida even I found myself suprised by what had awaited me. To open the party the Pets had a dj spin in the performace room while mingling with friends and fans out in the patio. Consistently delviering strong performances while displaying a strong appreciation for the fan base, the Heavy Pets never disappoint.
The band came on stage at around 10:30 and jolted the crowd with its high energy infusion of jam rock, dub, funk, soul, and blues. They opened with Do it Right and kept true to the song title. The audience grew larger as the the band journeyed through it's first of two sets. Never before have I witnessed a Heavy Pets show with such a strong connection with its fans. The energy in the room was contagious as many concert goers found themselves raging to the sounds of the Pets. The band played an intense 30 minute version of it's hit song, "So Thank You Music" which prompted athe audience to respond with a shower of glow sticks that lit up the room. The Culture Room amped up its light system and cranked out a visual masterpiece that perfected assimilated into the grooves of the band's songs.
The Heavy Pets treated the audience with selection from its second album. Dueling guiatarist and vocalists, Jeff Lloyd and Mike Garulli brilliantly performed Lazy Anna and Jackie Bones. In addition to their intensity on guitar, Keyboardist, Jim Wuest had the crowd dancing with a fury with his catchy solos on the keys. Bassist, Justin Carney and drummer Jaime Newett sharply delivered, which helped create a show for the record books. To close the evevning the Pets concluded their second set with Holy Holy to end the night on a high note. The band never wavered in its energy and committment to entertain throughout the evening.
The Heavy Pets have drastically evolved since the release of their first album, Whale. The combination of their instrumental evolution and ability to experiment with the origin of their sound only helps to thrust the band into the mainstream. Having played renown festivals such as Langerado, Bonnaroo and their own festival,PetZoo, the Heavy Pets are growing in popularity and should be a future headliner to come.

The"State" of Florida Senatorial Race
The upcoming race to fill former Senator, Mel Martienez's seat has taken seen some drastic changes in recent weeks. Florida Governor, Charlie Crist has decided to run as a Independent in hopes of improving his chances of defeating his Republican opponent, Marco Rubio. The Republican primary polls were showing Rubio in the lead for the Republican nomination, which left Crist with little option then to leave his party. The growing influence of the Tea Party movement has impacted many campaigns across the nation and Crist has found himself another casualty of its work.
Crist has seen himself challenged for his veto of a state education bill that would have based teacher pay on merit and student performance. The decision to push for such legislation shows a apparent lack of compassion and common sense on the side of its supporters. The lack of funds in Florida's budget has left departments feeling the heat. Education has seen it's budget slashed and little hope for an increase in funds. Florida's teachers are given less to work with and expected to produce even more. Crist was aware of the potential effects such legislation would have had on many Floridians who work in a necessary area of public service.
Republican nominee Marco Rubio has used the Governor's veto against him in addition to Crsit's acceptance of Stimulus funds provided by the Obama Administration, in hopes of providing unemployed Floridians with temporary work while they search for something long term. Rubio has gained appeal with the Right Wing of the Republican party and has remained untarnished by recent controversy over use of Republican Party funds on personal expenditures. He has failed to be consistent on his stance on Immigration reform and has thrown Hispanics under the bus with his shift on policy.
Sadly, the Democratic Party has seen itself in a state of invisibility because of a lack of a viable candidate to run against House Represenative, Kendrick Meeks. Meeks has been a respected, experienced member of the House and vigiliantly fought for preservation of Florida's everglades and expansion of unemployment benefits to combat the effects of increased layoffs in the state. Meeks stood in suuport with President Obama on Health Care reform but has failed to raise his level of visibility outside of his South Florida district. Currently, the Republicans have raised the most funds, while Crist has the needed fame among the Floridian populace because of his tenure as Governor. Meeks has found himself falling third in the push to raise enough funds for a tough, three way battle between himself, Rubio, and Crist.
The reality of the race reveals little hope for the Democrats at this point in time. Unless Meeks is able to attract more attention on a state wide level, Crist offers appeal to Conservatives and Liberals. Crist is likely to support Republican platforms on Gay Marriage and Abortion but has been a supporter in private investment in alternative "green" energy sources and worked to restore and preserve Florida's Everglades. Crist's recent veto of the Merit Based legislation bill has given him some popularity among Florida's teachers. Rubio has mass appeal to conservative voters for his alignment with the Tea Party movement, which has served as a detriment to moderate Republicans all over the nation.Time will tell how the election will pan out but if the election were to be decided this week, Crist would probably win the seat. Rubio would likely trail Crist by a small percentage while Meeks would find himself in third place.
